Counselor Credential Abbreviations

What all the initials mean:
  • ACS--Approved Clinical Supervisor as certified by the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) and the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC)
  • CHt--Clinical Hypnotherapist
  • EMDR--Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
  • LCSW--Licensed Clinical Social Worker
  • LISW--Licensed Independent Social worker--the highest level of professional licensing for social workers in the state of New Mexico. Allows the social worker to work without supervision and to supervise others.
  • LMFT--Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist--licensure for those who have taken specialized training in the area of marriage and family therapy. Allows the marriage and family therapist to work without supervision and to supervise others.
  • LMHC--Licensed Mental Health Counselor--the first level of professional licensing in the state of New Mexico. Allows the counselor to work as a counselor with supervision.
  • LPAT--Licensed Professional Art Therapist--the highest level of professional licensing for art therapists in the state of New Mexico. Allows the art therapist to work without supervision and to supervise others.
  • LPCC--Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor--the highest level of professional licensing for counselors in the state of New Mexico. Allows the counselor to work as a counselor without supervision and to supervise others.
  • MA--Master of Arts degree
  • MSW--Master of Social Work
  • NBCCH--National Board Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist
  • NCC--Nationally Certified Counselor as certified by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC)
